Why is Electric Maritime Transportation Important for the Cities of the Future?

Elektrikli Deniz Ulaşımı Neden Geleceğin Şehirleri İçin Önemli?

Transportation systems in the world's major cities are undergoing a serious transformation. Electric cars, rail systems, micromobility solutions and renewable energy infrastructures are becoming increasingly important parts of city planning. However, for coastal cities, there is another dimension of this transformation that is often not adequately evaluated: maritime transportation.

Many cities, from metropolises living close to the sea like Istanbul to the coastal cities of Europe, have an important waterway transportation potential. Despite this, most of the urban maritime transportation is still carried out by traditional boats that use fossil fuels.

This situation is not only in terms of carbon emissions; It also creates significant problems in terms of fuel costs, maintenance costs, engine noise, vibration and operational efficiency.

Electric marine vehicles offer a completely different approach to this equation.

Electric propulsion is not just engine replacement

Removing a diesel engine and replacing it with an electric motor alone does not create an efficient electric marine vehicle.

In order for an electric boat to be successful, many parameters must be evaluated together, from hull architecture to battery capacity, from service speed to weight distribution.

Because one of the most important factors that determine the energy needs of a marine vessel is hydrodynamic resistance.

As the hull moves through the water, losses occur due to friction, wave resistance and pressure. More resistance requires more power to maintain the same speed.

For this reason, the first question in electric marine vehicles is usually "How big a battery can we use?" should not be.

The more correct question is:

How can we perform the same task with less energy?

Therefore, in Navarc's engineering approach, hull geometry, propulsion system and mission profile are evaluated within the same design problem.

The role of solar energy

Solar energy can make a significant contribution to the energy architecture of electric marine vehicles.

Solar panels integrated into the usable upper surfaces of the boat can support the energy balance of the battery system under suitable conditions.

Most of the time, the goal here is not to have the boat run solely on solar energy.

The real value is that a certain part of the energy needed during operation is met directly from a renewable source.

Even small energy gains can make significant differences in the annual operating scale, especially in urban passenger boats that operate for long periods of time during the day.

Transformation for operators

Electric maritime transportation should not be considered only as an environmental project.

The real question for a municipality or fleet operator is how economically the vehicle performs daily operation.

Reduced fuel consumption, reduced maintenance requirements thanks to electric motors with fewer moving parts, and reduced unplanned downtime can affect the overall economics of operation.

At this point, Total Cost of Ownership, that is, TCO, becomes more important than the purchase price.

How much energy a boat consumes over the years, how many maintenance times it requires, and how long it is out of service are factors that determine its true economic performance.

Quieter cities, quieter seas

Another important advantage of electric propulsion systems is the low noise and vibration level.

While this creates a more comfortable journey for passengers, it can also improve the quality of the working environment for the captain and crew.

It is also important in reducing mechanical noise emitted into the marine environment.

The maritime transportation systems of the future will not consist only of vehicles focusing on zero emissions.

Platforms that use energy more intelligently, operate more quietly and are designed according to real operation data will come to the fore.

This approach is the basis of Navarc's Solarvess series.

The aim is not just to develop an electric passenger boat; Rethinking the energy, comfort and operation equation of urban surface transportation.

True performance is not about challenging nature, but about progressing in harmony with it.
